Five Non Alcoholic Drinks Perfect for a Boozeless Breakfast or Brunch

Brunch may have been around for a century or more, but the phenomenon of bottomless mimosas is a decidedly millennial trend, with the champagne cocktails featuring at least as prominently as any of the food favourites of this breakfast-y midday meal.

If the idea of enjoying your Sunday with a clear head rather than missing out on it because of a day-drinking hangover is appealing, you can still enjoy the full brunch experience, minus the alcohol. With non alcoholic wines improving all the time and a plethora of creative mocktail recipes (or “nocktails” as we prefer to call them) available, you can have your breakfast drinks, and your Sunday afternoon, too. We think you’ll thank us on Monday morning!

To get you inspired for your boozeless brunch, here are five of our favourite non alcoholic breakfast or brunch drink recipes:

The Non-alcoholic Caesar Mocktail

The Tried and True: You CAN make a non-alcoholic Caesar

A breakfast and brunch classic, our recipe for a non alcoholic bloody Mary, or it’s distinctly Canadian variation, the bloody Caesar (which uses Clamato juice rather than regular tomato juice) kicks things up a notch with the addition of a spicy celery and jalapeno shrub. Get our recipe here.

Non-alcoholic Greyhound Gin Mocktail

This gin mocktail is not always on the brunch menu, but we think it should be – the citrusy zing of grapefruit juice makes it a fitting side to a delicious eggs Benedict. There are some excellent alcohol free gins on the market that make stirring up this simple, three ingredient mocktail a snap, and you won’t miss the alcohol. Get our Greyhound recipe here!

Non-alcoholic Sparkling Wine Mocktail with Pink Lemonade

Sparkling wine and sparkling rose are the highlight of the non-alcoholic drinks world. It’s a great option to serve for brunch with friends. If you’re fancy, this non alcoholic sparkling wine cocktail can be mixed in a pitcher and shared with everyone! All you need is a bottle of alcohol free sparkling rose, some club soda, and a can of frozen lemonade. Gently stir, garnish and enjoy. It looks just as pretty as its alcoholic alter-ego, without the dehydrating and headache-inducing effects. Get our AF-ternoon Recess recipe here.

And…. here’s our a list of amazing non-alcoholic sparkling roes wines to use in this recipe!

Triple-citrus Kombucha Fizz Mocktail

You don’t always have to find ways to substitute the booze in alcoholic brunch drink recipes – you can also try something completely new, like this kombucha cocktail. It’s a elevated example of what a brunch beverage can be, supporting your digestive health and immune system while also delighting your palette.

The Fauxmosa

What’s brunch without a mimosa in hand? A smart decision, as far as we’re concerned! Especially when it means you can head into your weekend afternoon with a clear head and plenty of energy, rather than a post-alcohol slump. But if you miss the experience of sipping a mimosa in the morning, try this super-simple substitute: Fill a glass with half good-quality orange juice and half Canada Dry ginger ale, and enjoy. Make sure the glass is beautiful and the ginger ale is very well-chilled for an easy brunch mocktail that it simply perfect!

Looking for more ideas of non alcoholic brunch options? Here are a few suggestions:

The Riviera Dreams is a beautiful zero-proof version of the aperol spritz, or try this citrusy version for a tart twist, or try one of these four alcohol free sparkling wine cocktails that are not mimosas.

And of course there are plenty of traditional brunch choices that side-step the alcohol issue altogether - a delicious latte, freshly squeezed orange juice, or steaming hot cup of your favourite tea (we love an Irish Breakfast to start a Sunday) are all wonderful options. Happy brunching!
