The School For Good & Evil Sparkling Non Alcoholic Cocktail

This drink will transport you to a fairy tale land, where something dark and sinister is brewing beneath the shiny surface.

Non Alcoholic Sparkling Wine Mocktail

This is a gruesome drink that needs a little bit of advance prep, but can be pulled together and served to guests in under a minute once things are prepped.

The key to this drink is the bloody rim, a true Halloween mocktail effect that you will use year after year.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR THIS BLOODY MOCKTAIL

  • Non alcoholic sparkling wine Because this drink will become slightly sweeter due to the rim and grenadine, try finding a non alcoholic sparkling wine that is low in sugar and on the dry side; we use Noughty Sparkling Chardonnay or Oddbird Blanc de Blanc

  • Grenadine. A sweet syrup made from pomegranates, you can find grenadine at your local grocery store in the non alcoholic section usually; it’s not the same as Pomegranate Syrup (from brands like Monin, for instance).

  • Red Food Dye Coloring & Icing Sugar a drop of green and blue food colouring will also deepen the red colour if you desire

  • Corn Syrup If you’ve never had to buy corn syrup - it’s in the ‘syrup’ section with the maple syrup.

MAKING THE FAKE BLOOD RIM

  1. Start off by making the edible fake blood rim. In a microwavable, shallow bowl, mix together the red food dye coloring, the corn syrup and confectionary sugar.

  2. Mix the ingredients together until they are combined. If all of confectionary sugar will not fully combine with the other ingredients, it is okay. The mixture will resemble a thick paste.

  3. Microwave the mixture for 5 to 10 seconds, until it become looser. Think of liquid glue. If it is watery, simply wait 1 minute for it to thicken.

  4. Dip the top of the champagne flute or coupe glass into the mixture. You may need to angle the bowl accordingly. Be sure the rim is thicker because it will not drip if it is too thin.

  5. Place the glass upside down to allow the edible fake blood rim to drip slightly, then place it into the fridge for 3-5 minutes, allowing it to become stiff.

  6. Remove the glass from the fridge and pour the prosecco or champagne until it is ¾ full.

  7. Add in the grenadine and drink immediately.

Turn non alcoholic sparkling wine into a gruesome treat with fake blood.

Ingredients

Fake Blood
  • 1 tbsp corn syrup
  • 2 tbsp confectionary sugar
  • 15 drops red food dye coloring (for a darker red, add 1 or 2 drops of green)
Sparkling Cocktail
  • 4-5 oz non alcoholic sparkling wine
  • 1/2 oz Grenadine or Pomegranate Syrup

Instructions

To prepare the bloody rim
  1. Add all ingredients into a microwave safe, shallow bowl and mix with a fork until combined. It will resemble a thick paste. The confectionary sugar may not mix completely in which is fine.
  2. Microwave the mixture for 5-10 seconds until it gets slightly looser. It will be able to drip off the fork, but should not be too thin. If it's too liquidy, let it sit for 1 minute and it will thicken up.
  3. Press the rim of a coupe glass into the mixture, and swirl about 5 degrees to ensure the entire rim is thickly coated with the mixture and then stand upright to allow the edible fake blood to drip downward (it won't happen immediately if the mixture has thickened a lot)
  4. Place the glass in the refrigerator for 5 minutes to allow the blood to become stiff (once you take it out, the 'blood' warms up and will start to melt so try and serve these within about 20 minutes or it will be a 'bloody mess' :) )
Final Non Alcoholic Cocktail
  1. Pour non alcoholic sparkling wine into the coupe glass to about 3/4 full.
  2. Put the grenadine in a syringe or on a small spoon and gently pour into the center of the sparkling wine.
  3. Wait a minute or two for the grenadine to sink to the bottom for the "bloody cocktail" effect.
