Too tired to make a mocktail: Aperol Peach Spritz Edition

Spicy Peach Aperol Spritz Mocktail with Lyres Italian Spritz and ISH Sparkling Rose wine

Let’s be honest, there’s a time and a place for fancy mocktails and hard to source ingredients - they’re worth it if you’re a cocktail snob, but most evenings if I’m making a mocktail I’m a) using what I have on hand and b) not measuring unless I have to. Here’s a recipe that I created using this method and it turned out incredible!!

If you saw the Spicy Peach Sangria recipe, you’ll know we had a big batch of spicy peach syrup to use up. I thought it would be fun to try a non-alcoholic aperol spritz with the syrup, because the sweet heat sounded like a perfect combination for the bitter orange notes in Italian aperitifs. I was right!

The best non-alcoholic aperol

I have always stood by the Lyre’s Italian Spritz as hands down the best non-alcoholic aperol dupe out there. There are A LOT of great zero-proof amaros and aperitifs available now (Novara is great as is Wilfred’s), and just like full-octane options, they all taste just a little different and have their own uniqueness. Many of them are more like a campari than an aperol, and that’s why the Lyre’s Italian Spritz Style aperitif stands out. It’s a dead ringer for aperol and works 1:1 as a stand-in in almost any cocktail.

What does Lyre’s Italian Spritz taste like?

It has a citrusy candied taste, with just the right amount of bitter and blood orange sweetness. The real aperol has a ‘sunshine’ quality to it, and so does Lyre’s Italian Spritz. It’s juicy and sunny and bitter at the same time. It’s one of the best non-alcoholic spirits in this category.

Standard spritz ratios

A standard aperol spritz would call for 1:1 aperitif to sparkling wine ratio and a splash of seltzer, with dried or fresh blood orange as a garnish. In this case, we’re skipping the seltzer and just using sparkling wine in a larger ratio.

Low ABV option?

The best thing about a spritz, is that you can easily make it full alcohol, low alcohol or no-alcohol depending on who is drinking it. For a Low ABV version of this spritz, use regular prosecco in a half the quantity and top up with sparkling water. It ends up being approximately 5% ABV, which is much lower than the 25% ABV of a standard aperol spritz.
