Lone Ranger: A smoky and bubbly mocktail

A smoky French 75 alternative using zero-proof tequila and alcohol-free sparkling wine

The Lone Ranger is a modern classic from Portland bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler, created around 2012 as a smart riff on the French 75. Gin is swapped for tequila, Champagne for sparkling rosé, and the result is a brighter, softer, and more agave-forward drink than the original. It was invented for brunch but holds up any time you want something light and refreshing.

Named for the iconic masked hero, the Lone Ranger nods to the easygoing American West while staying within a classic cocktail framework.

In typical Some Good Clean Fun fashion, we had to make it a mocktail and make it our own way, and it turned out to be one of the best recipes in our collection.

What goes into this mocktail?

Dark tequila alternative: I’m using Almave Ambar because it has a nice smoky depth that really works with citrus.

Fresh Lemon Juice: Adds tart brightness.

Agave Syrup: The traditional recipe calls for simple syrup but agave syrup is a much better match with the smoky flavours and texmex flair of this mocktail.

Non-alcoholic Sparkling Rosé: Adds bubbles and subtle red berry fruitiness. I used Wander + Found Sparkling Rosé but you can use anything you have on hand.

Garnish: Lemon twist, or if you want to be extra, freeze floral or round ice balls with dried flower petals for a romantic twist.

Glassware: The original recipes put this drink in a Collins glass but I think it’s way better in a large coupe especially if you want to elevate this for a special occasion.

BEFORE YOU START: Chill your glassware in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before pulling this recipe together.
