Best Non-Alcoholic Tequila of 2026: Blind-Tasted & Ranked

As a sober sommelier and margarita lover, I’ve spent six years tasting every agave alternative that hits the market. To save you from the 'watery' disappointments - or options that just make you sneeze from the pepper - I blind-tasted 13 of the most popular non-alcoholic tequilas on the market to see which ones stood out and which ones actually hold up in a margarita. I found six of them to recommend for your home bar, with the others ranging from mediocre to ‘don’t bother’. Below is my honest ranking from the top-tier winners to the options you should skip.

The Quick Verdict: the best non-alcoholic tequila for 2026 is Free Spirits Spirit of Tequila. It provides the closest burn and vegetal agave profile to a traditional Blanco. For the best spicy agave flavour, ISH Mexican Agave has a noticeable peppery kick that doesn’t disappear in tequila-style mocktails. For a basic margarita, Ritual Zero Proof Tequila Alternative remains the most reliable and accessible high-heat alternative.

One to Skip: While many brands get it right, I recommend skipping CleanCo Clean T. It has a beautiful bottle, but in my blind tasting, it completely lacked the essential 'bite' of tequila and tasted primarily like expensive water. If you're spending $30+, you deserve a spirit that doesn’t get lost in a margarita.

    1. FREE SPIRITS SPIRIT OF TEQUILA

    Best Overall Non-Alcoholic Tequila

Free Spirits The Spirit of Tequila is the best non-alcoholic tequila overall for 2026 because it mimics the vegetal agave profile and soft spicy burn of a traditional tequila better than any competitor.

Tasting Notes: This non-alcoholic tequila is a Reposado style zero proof spirit, with heat and an flavour matched in a truly unique and elevated way. Free Spirits has a weight to it, unlike most other zero proof tequilas, so you can almost drink it on the rocks. The gentle burn doesn’t get lost in mocktails and truly stands up to lime and other citrus. I love the inclusion of functional ingredients like B vitamins, which give it a slight "lift" without the booze.

Verdict: Off the 13 bottles I blind-tasted, I knew right away which one was Free Spirits. It’s been #1 for many years and despite a slight formula change, it’s still the perfect option for any non-alcoholic tequila-style mocktail.

    2. ISH Mexican Agave Spirit

    Best Spicy Heat

ISH Mexican Agave has the best spicy heat in a non-alcoholic tequila and is great for mocktails because its natural capsaicin heat provides a peppery kick that doesn't disappear when mixed with citrus.

The Review: I've noticed that many non-alcoholic spirits try to fake the burn of alcohol with too much ginger or pepper, but ISH has perfected the blend of flavour and heat. I found it to be zesty and fresh on the palate, with a heat that is genuinely like a traditional tequila. While it’s a little bit more vegetal than Free Spirits, I consider it to be similar quality when mixed into mocktail recipes.

The Verdict: This is top-tier "value" pick at a price point lower than some other options, but that delivers a reliable, spicy experience for anyone who wants their mocktail to have some actual bite.

    3. Ritual Zero Proof Tequila Alternative

    Best Grocery Store Option

Ritual Zero Proof Tequila Alternative is not only the most accessible zero proof tequila, found in grocery stores across the U.S, but it has a strong, spicy heat that is ideal for a margarita mocktail.

The Review: Ritual Zero Proof tequila alternative has been a staple on my bar for years, and for good reason. I've found it to be the most aggressive in terms of heat and it has a sharp, smoky finish. It’s the best option for a quick margarita, but it really sings in a spicy watermelon margarita mocktail. I highly recommend it for high-volume pitcher recipes for entertaining because it is so easy to find and consistently delivers that spirit-forward sensation.

The Verdict: This is the workhorse of the zero-proof tequila alternatives. It’s accessible, affordable, and provides the heat that most people new to the experience are looking for.

    4. Almave Blanco

    Best For On The Rocks

Almave is the best sipping-style non-alcoholic tequila because it uses real blue agave from Jalisco to create a sophisticated, earthy profile without the added fake heat.

The Review: Many non-alcoholic tequilas are made by adding flavors to water, but Almave is actually distilled from the agave plant itself. I found this creates a much more authentic "earthy" sweetness. It does lack the aggressive burn of Ritual or ISH, but that’s what makes it perfect for those who want to taste the nuances of the liquid.

The Verdict: A sophisticated alternative to tequila that actually lives up to the hype. Perfect for those who prefer the herbal, sweeter side of tequila over the spicy burn.

    5. Monday Mezcal

    Best Smoky Mezcal Style Alternative

ISH Mexican Agave has the best spicy heat in a non-alcoholic tequila and is great for mocktails because its natural capsaicin heat provides a peppery kick that doesn't disappear when mixed with citrus.

The Review: This was one of the first zero-proof spirits I truly fell in love with, and it remains a staple in my personal bar. While I found it slightly thinner on the front palate during my 2026 blind tasting, the experience quickly shifts into a impressive, clean burn at the back of the throat. There is a pleasant saltiness that anchors the agave notes, and while the weight is lighter than some competitors, I’ve found that this actually helps it blend seamlessly without making a mocktail feel heavy.

The Verdict: If you are a fan of that signature smoky Mezcal flavour and want a high-heat alternative that won't get lost in a complex recipe, this is a great choice.

    Price: $42 USD

    6. Cut Above Agave Blanco

    Best Agave Flavour

Cut Above Agave Blanco has a nice hefty weight and really reflects the herbal vegetal profile of natural agave. It’s a smooth option to sip on the rocks.

The Review: Another tequila alternative review suggested that Cut Above Agave Blanco was too grassy to be good, but I disagree completely. The vegetal grassy taste profile is what makes this so interesting and flavourful enough to drink on the rocks (there is a tiny chemical aftertaste though). It wasn’t as good in standard mocktail recipes because of the softer heat and flavour profile, but it would be really good in a Herb Gardener recipe with spring fresh herbs.

The Verdict: Don’t pass on this bottle if you want something unique. It’s not as perfect as Free Spirits but it will be fun to play with in alternative tequila-style mocktails.

    7. Spiritless Jalisco 55

    Best For Tropical Margaritas

Spiritless Jalisco 55 is the best choice for tropical mocktails because its unique grassy and smoky profile complements bold fruit flavors like passionfruit and pineapple without getting lost.

The Review: Spiritless Jalisco 55 is so unique and it can be a polarizing choice for a traditional scratch margarita because it’s not your typical Blanco dupe. I’ve experienced its true strength when paired with tropical flavours. It has a distinct earthy backbone and a hint of smoke that pairs so well with the sweetness of tropical fruit.

The Verdict: If you love a spicy passionfruit margarita and want an agave alternative that complements the flavours rather than just a simple burn, this is the bottle to grab.

    8. Trejo’s Spirits Tequila Alternative

The Best Bespoke Small Batch Tequila Alternative

Trejo’s Spirits is a bespoke tequila alternative with a small-batch feel. It has a soft heat and authentic vegetal notes ideal for frozen or fruit-forward mocktails.

The Review: Founded by Danny Trejo, this zero proof spirit feels like a more authentic departure from mass-market options. I find it to have a softer, more mediocre flavor profile when sipped neat, with subtle earthy, vegetal notes. This combination makes it a chef’s kiss in fruit-forward recipes without too much citrus. I highly recommend using this in a Mimosarita or a Frozen Peach Margarita where the fruit can play off those grassy undertones.

Tequila Alternatives to Skip (and Why)

In the 2026 non-alcoholic market, beautiful branding doesn't always equal a high-quality spirit. Here are the bottles from my blind tasting that I just don’t think are worth the investment of $30+ dollars for what you get:

    • Seven Giants: This U.K.-made spirit was a major disappointment. I found the texture to be unpleasantly oily and heavy, with a distinct chemical note that lingered on the palate.

    • CleanCo Clean T: As mentioned at the top of the page, this bottle is stunning on a bar cart but fails in the glass. I noticed it completely lacks the essential bite of tequila, making it taste primarily like expensive water when mixed.

    • Dhos Spirits Agave: During my testing, I experienced a very watery profile with zero heat. Despite some faint smoky notes, it lacks the structure needed to stand up to lime juice and agave nectar in a standard mocktail.

    • Cut Above Mezcal: This was far too floral for a mezcal alternative. I found it lacked the smokiness and heat required to dupe a mezcal or to even function in a mocktail, causing it to get lost immediately once combined with other ingredients.

    • NKD Tequila Alternative: I give them marks for being the only all-natural option with nothing artificial, which is a rare feat. However, I’ve found that both the flavor and heat still need significant work. It's currently too soft to provide a satisfying tequila experience but I can imagine with some tweaks it will soon be as good as the ones at the top of the list.

    Tasting Methodology

All 13 tequilas were blind-tasted in a controlled environment using standard glasses to ensure an unbiased evaluation of aroma, heat, and weight. Test recipes included a classic margarita cocktail and a grapefruit paloma.

FAQs About Non-Alcoholic Tequila (2025 Edition)

    What is non alcoholic tequila?

Non-alcoholic (or zero-proof) tequilas are alcohol-free spirits inspired by tequila. They’re made using agave extracts or botanical blends and designed to be used in alcohol-free cocktails like margaritas or palomas.

    How is non-alcoholic tequila made?

Alcohol-free tequila is made through one of two processes that result in a liquid that replicates the unique, deep flavours of real tequila. Some producers start with full-proof distilled tequila and then remove the alcohol, whereas others may “build it” from the ground up by macerating blue agave, liquid smoke, capiscum and other ingredients into a tequila-style beverage.

Can you drink non-alcoholic tequila straight?

Yes — many alcohol-free tequilas are made to be sipped neat or on the rocks. Almave and Free Spirits are two brands with bold, complex flavors that hold up without mixers.

Does non-alcoholic tequila taste like real tequila?

Some brands come surprisingly close! While they lack the alcohol burn, top picks like Almave and Monday offer earthy, peppery agave notes that mimic traditional tequila.

Where can I buy non-alcoholic tequila in the U.S. and Canada?

In the U.S., you’ll find options at retailers like The Zero Proof and Boisson. Canadian shoppers can try Dry Variety, or Well.ca. Always check if shipping is available to your region.

Is non-alcoholic tequila good for margaritas?

Absolutely! These tequilas are perfect for classic mocktails like margaritas and palomas. Look for one with a bright, citrus-friendly flavor and a hint of smoky spice.
