/Sponsored by Dry Variety. All opinions are our own.
Tanqueray 0.0 is a non-alcoholic gin alternative produced by Tanqueray, one of the most established names in the global gin category. It is designed to replicate the flavor profile of Tanqueray London Dry Gin without alcohol. Read this review to find out more about how Tanqueray 0.0 is made, how it tastes, and how it performs compared to both its traditional gin counterpart and other non-alcoholic gin alternatives on the market.
What Is Tanqueray 0.0
Tanqueray 0.0 is a non-alcoholic spirit alternative intended to be used in the same way as gin. It contains 0.0 percent alcohol by volume and is therefore classified as alcohol-free - this is different than other non-alcoholic gins that contain between 0.05% and 0.5% ABV and are considered non-alcoholic.
The product was developed to be a direct substitute for Tanqueray London Dry Gin in mixed drinks, particularly in simple serves such as a gin and tonic. Its purpose is functional rather than aspirational: to deliver a familiar gin profile in a zero proof format.
About Tanqueray
Tanqueray is one of the most recognizable names in gin, with a history that dates back to 1830. The brand was founded by Charles Tanqueray in London and became known for producing a distinct style of London Dry Gin that emphasized clarity, dryness, and a juniper-forward profile.
Unlike many gins that rely heavily on floral or experimental botanicals, Tanqueray has long been associated with a relatively tight botanical bill, built around juniper, citrus, coriander, and angelica root. This restrained structure has contributed to its widespread adoption in bars and its consistent performance in classic gin cocktails.
Tanqueray’s entry into the non-alcoholic spirits category reflects a broader trend among legacy spirits producers. Rather than creating a completely new product line, the brand has attempted to translate its existing gin profile into a zero alcohol format while maintaining brand continuity.
How Tanqueray 0.0 Is Made
Tanqueray 0.0 is produced using a process that begins with traditional gin distillation techniques. The same botanicals used in Tanqueray London Dry Gin are distilled in alcohol to extract their volatile flavor compounds. This initial step is critical, as alcohol is the solvent that captures botanical aromas and flavors that are difficult to extract using water alone.
Once the distillation process is complete, the alcohol is removed. While Tanqueray does not publicly disclose every technical detail of its dealcoholization process, it is generally understood that they use vacuum distillation. This method lowers the boiling point of alcohol, allowing it to be separated at lower temperatures and reducing damage to delicate botanical compounds.
After alcohol removal, the resulting liquid is adjusted to restore balance. This often involves reintroducing botanical distillates or adjusting concentrations to compensate for the structural role alcohol normally plays. Ethanol contributes body, warmth, and length to spirits, so non-alcoholic alternatives must rely entirely on botanical intensity and acidity to create structure.
The result is a zero proof liquid that retains many of the aromatic markers of gin, though without the viscosity or alcoholic heat of a traditional spirit.
Botanicals and Flavor Profile
Tanqueray 0.0 is built around the same core botanicals as Tanqueray London Dry Gin. These include juniper berries, coriander seed, angelica root, and citrus elements derived primarily from lime and lemon.
Juniper remains the dominant note, which distinguishes Tanqueray 0.0 from many non-alcoholic gins that lean heavily into citrus or floral profiles. The citrus components provide brightness and lift, while coriander contributes a mild spice and angelica adds a dry, earthy backbone.
Without alcohol, these botanicals present differently. Aromatics are often more pronounced on the nose, while the palate experience is lighter and less cohesive. The absence of ethanol removes both bitterness and warmth, which can alter how flavors integrate.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
The aroma is immediately recognizable as gin-adjacent. The juniper is perfectly balanced with fresh citrus peel and a light herbal note. The nose is clean and focused, without the sweetness that characterizes some non-alcoholic spirits.
Palate:
On the palate, Tanqueray 0.0 is fun and bright. Juniper remains central, though it presents more softly than in a traditional gin. Citrus notes follow quickly, offering brightness but limited depth. Coriander provides some spice, but there’s also a sweetness which is quite different from the traditional Tanqueray. It’s probably been added to balance out the bitter and herbal notes left behind after removing the alcohol.
Like most non-alcoholic spirits, the flavors taper off quickly, leaving a faint impression of juniper and citrus. What is really lacking in this spirit is the heat - where some producers will add capiscum to emulate the burn of alcohol, this is non-existent in the Tanqueray 0.0 leaving it a bit flat.
Texture and Mouthfeel:
Texture is thin compared to traditional gin and some other n/a gins. There is very little viscosity or weight, which is typical for spirits in this category with a 0.0% ABV vs a 0.5% ABV - even this small amount of alcohol can add weight. This lighter mouthfeel becomes more noticeable when the product is diluted with ice or tonic.
How Tanqueray 0.0 Performs in Mixed Drinks
Tanqueray 0.0 is most effective in simple mixed drinks because in more complex cocktails, Tanqueray 0.0 tends to fade. It’s great in a traditional G&T, particularly when paired with a dry tonic water. Another excellent pairing is a strawberry gin fizz - the sweetness of the summer berries are a great match with the notes in Tanqueray.
Citrus garnish improves performance by reinforcing brightness and compensating for the absence of alcohol.
As with most non-alcoholic gins, restraint is key.
Comparison to Traditional Tanqueray Gin
When compared directly to Tanqueray London Dry Gin, Tanqueray 0.0 succeeds in capturing the aromatic profile of the original which is exactly what most people looking to use it are hoping for. The flavor direction is accurate. The juniper-forward character and citrus balance closely mimics the brand’s established flavour identity. This makes Tanqueray 0.0 more convincing than many non-alcoholic gins that drift away from classic gin structure. As mentioned though, the only thing lacking is some heat so you might need to compensate for that with adding half an oz of another gin that has more heat.
How Tanqueray 0.0 Compares to Other Non-Alcoholic Gins
Within the non-alcoholic gin category, Tanqueray 0.0 occupies a relatively interesting position in that they aren’t trying to out-smart other n/a gin brands. They’ve prioritized familiarity with their brand, over re-inventing the wheel with unusual botanicals, sweetness, or strong acidity.
Its juniper intensity and sweetness are higher than average for the category, which will appeal to those seeking a closer approximation of conventional gin with a sweeter touch. However, its light mouthfeel places it squarely within the limitations common to zero proof spirits. This probably comes down to the actual 0.0 ABV rating of the product as there isn’t even 0.5% alcohol to marginally enhance the mouthfeel.
There ARE better non-alcoholic gins on the market, but better is relative. This is actually a great option for someone new to alcohol-free or zero-proof spirits.
Who Tanqueray 0.0 Is Best For
Tanqueray 0.0 is best suited to those who are new to non-alcoholic drinks and mocktails. It’s got a classic gin flavor profile that is familiar to anyone who has had a gin and tonic and want something similar. It is particularly appropriate for simple mixed drinks like a gin fizz or a gin and tonic.
Those expecting the full body and length of traditional gin may find it limited. As with all non-alcoholic spirits, expectations should be adjusted for the lack of alcohol and instead embracing the flavour and lack of side effects.
