Switchel-ing It Up

Sponsored by Crazy D’s Labs

A switchel is not technically a cocktail, but rather it’s a health drink that’s been around for at least two hundred years. It’s made with ginger water, apple cider vinegar and sweetened with lemons and maple syrup - and around here we add non-alcoholic bourbon to elevate it to non-alcoholic cocktail status.

The lore around the switchel is that it’s an old-timey gatorade that farm labourers drank to beat the heat. Aside from hydration it has a whole host of health benefits like helping to stabilise blood sugar, and contributing to good gut-health. It’s an ideal drink to tackle the start of Dry January especially if you’ve over indulged.

The traditional recipe calls for ginger water to be made, but that takes time and forethought. Crazy D’s Ginga Kick is like a hack to make a switchel easily at home. It’s a prebiotic no added sugar soda that replicates ginger water. It’s lightly sweetened with a prebiotic root vegetables called yacon and chicory which don’t impact your blood sugar. These vegetables (along with acacia fibre) also have the added benefit of prebiotic fibre. Combined with apple cider vinegar, this drink is sure to have a positive impact on your gut health.

Ingredients

1 oz lemon juice
2 oz non-alcoholic bourbon
½ tsp ACV
1 oz monkfruit syrup or maple syrup
1 can Crazy D’s Ginga Kick

Preparation

Add the first four ingredients to a highball glass, add crushed ice about half way up the cup and stir to combine and chill. Top with Crazy D’s Ginga Kick. Garnish with lemon slices.
