Espresso Stout Martini Mocktail with Guinness 0
/As an adult non-drinker, I’ve rediscovered an appreciation for my Irish culture in a way that’s not associated with heavy drinking, but I still love the taste of Guinness and whiskey, just not the effects. Here’s an ode to my legacy as an Irish American, a Guinness 0.0 Espresso Martini Mocktail.
Non-alcoholic Guinness
Non-alcoholic Guinness or Guinness 0.0 is a great tasting non-alcoholic nitrogen stout. We wrote a full review of it here, but overall, it has the same dark brown bread notes, and nice and mellow and nutty just like the full octane Guinness.
Non-alcoholic whiskey or bourbon?
We love non-alcoholic bourbon, but just not in this cocktail. In this recipe, make sure you’re using a whiskey dupe and not something that’s labelled bourbon-style - it makes a huge difference in the flavour. Bourbon is generally sweeter and nuttier (sometimes has butter notes). Guinness 0.0 is already malty and slightly nutty, so it would be overkill. This recipe uses a brand called Undone whiskey which has a clean flavour of copper still whiskey.
What if I don’t have an espresso machine?
Dark coffee is fine! We use a Bialetti mokka pot from Italy, which is a reverse percolator on the stove top. The coffee is dark roast, and fine grind, and has a similar taste to strong espresso. There’s only 2 ounces in the recipe, so it won’t make a huge difference!
Adding hot coffee to a cocktail with cream
The key to making sure this cream-based drink doesn’t curdle, is to add the ice to the shaker with the whiskey, cream and syrup, and then pour over the espresso. You can also let the coffee cool a little bit before doing this. If you’re making it in advance for a group, great! It won’t change the taste.
With the first three ingredients, you’re essentially making a home-made zero proof Irish Cream, then adding espresso and beer to it.
You could also add the beer to the glass, after you’ve shaken and strained the other ingredients, to make sure it doesn’t explode in your shaker. It does slightly change the taste.
Ingredients
1 1/2 - 2 oz non-alcoholic whiskey *(see note below)
1 oz half and half cream
1 tsp Irish cream syrup (pre-made/store-bought)
2 oz Guinness 0.0 Stout
2 oz espresso or mocha pot coffee
Preparation
Add first four ingredients to a shaker, add ice and then pour espresso over top. Cover and briefly shake to chill - the stout will be frothy so be careful! Strain into a martini glass and garnish with chocolate shavings.
Sláinte my friends!

Notes
An important note about non-alcoholic whiskey: We love non-alcoholic bourbon, but just not in this cocktail.
