Low sugar, high-benefit kiwi margarita mocktail
/What do you do with a supersize container of kiwis that no-one in your family is eating? Make margarita mocktails obviously. As I get older, I’ve become more and more conscious of food waste and its impact on the planet. My good friend Puneeta over at Maple & Marigold is a good resource for how to help yourself and the planet by using up what you’ve got in your fridge. She’s always on my mind when these situations come up!
I’ve also been watching my added sugar lately, so this was a perfect way to use up all that fruit and some extra non-alcoholic tequila I had on hand, plus be able to add some sweetness without a sugary overload.
Sugar by the numbers
The tequila, lime juice and soda water in this recipe have negligible added sugar. There is about 1-2 oz of kiwi ‘juice’ from the macerated kiwi in each glass, which is approximately 5 grams of sugar. To put this in perspective, a piece of fruit is 10g of sugar usually, and a can of soda is about 30g-40g of sugar. The kiwi juice adds just the right amount of sweetness to this cocktail without tasting like a sugary mocktail.
Benefits of using kiwi in your non-alcoholic cocktails
Kiwi is a very water-rich fruit so not only is it easy to macerate and get liquid out of, but it’s extra hydrating as well. Kiwi is also a great source of antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin E, and carotenoids. These things contribute to skin health, immune system support and more. Even the small amount of kiwi juice in this recipe contributes to your daily levels (and go ahead, munch on some of the fruit left over in the cocktail shaker for a boost in fiber!).
Pulling the mocktail together
Ingredients
3-4 kiwis, skinned and chopped
Juice from 1 lime (about 1 oz)
4 oz non alcoholic tequila
A pinch of salt
Soda water
This cocktail is as simple as scooping out the insides of a few kiwis, dicing them up and tossing them into a cocktail shaker. Using a wooden spoon or muddler, gently muddle the fruit - kiwi is delicate and can be messy if you muddle it too much, so just be gentle!
Add in the lime, non-alcoholic tequila and salt and shake with ice to chill.
Divide between two bodega glasses with fresh ice, using a hawthorne strainer to prevent the kiwi from blocking the top of a traditional cocktail shaker spout.
Top with club soda or soda water (whatever you prefer) and garnish with fresh kiwi slices.
Cheers from my dry bar to yours!
