The Sober Diaries by Clare Pooley
/There is a very entrenched social idea that only alcoholics who have hit rock bottom need to get ‘sober’. No other book challenges this idea better than Clare Pooley’s The Sober Diaries: How One Woman Stopped Drinking and Started Living. Pooley herself was a former advertising executive turned stay-at-home mother of three, and as she admits, a lifelong party animal. As a stay-at-home-mum, she found herself leaning more and more on her bottle of wine to deal with the ups and downs of being the primary caregiver. She knows she is beginning to have a serious problem, and makes a last ditch attempt to breakup with booze.
Who is this book for:
Pooley charts her journey through sobriety in a light-hearted and relatable way that won’t scare you away. This book is for anyone who is a mother or a caregiver, and wondering whether there is life for a yummy-mummy after wine. Unlike a lot of quit lit, Pooley doesn’t hit you over the head with science or statistics but shares the knowledge about alcohol she discovered on her own journey.
Format:
This is a really easy read, and Pooley has formatted the chapters as if it’s a journal marking her progress from day 1 to day 266 and beyond. This is an enjoyable way to read a book about quitting drinking, because you can see the author’s progress happen from chapter to chapter.
The Sober Diaries is available everywhere books are sold in both digital and print. Happy reading!
