Review: Leitz Eins Zwei Zero Non-Alcoholic Sparkling Rose

Dry Variety Drinks ($18.99) and Upside Drinks ($19.95 - ships across both Canada and the U.S.).

The Leitz Eins Zwei Zero non-alcoholic sparkling rose is impressive, and sits amongst the best in class options in this category.

This non-alcoholic wine is made from pinot noir grapes grown at the beautiful historical 200-year old Leitz vineyard in the German Rheingau wine region.

Pinot noir, also known as Spätburgunder in German, has a long history in the country, dating back to the Middle Ages. The grape was first brought to Germany by monks in the 14th century. The popularity of pinot noir declined in the 20th century due to the rise of varietals like riesling. In recent years, pinot noir has seen a resurgence in popularity and is now widely planted throughout Germany.

The grape thrives in cool climates, and the Leitz vineyards are perfectly situated on steep slopes with varying soil types, including loam and quartzite. The climate, with its moderate temperatures and long growing season, allows the grapes to ripen slowly, developing complex aromas and flavors. The resulting wines - both alcoholic and non-alcoholic - are known for their elegance, finesse, and subtle fruit flavors, often with notes of red berries, cherries, and spices.

Upon opening the bottle and pouring, you’ll immediately notice a beautiful pink hue with a lively effervescence. The nose was filled with the sweet aroma of fresh strawberries, along with a subtle hint of citrus. Not even a slight whiff of chemical processing.

On the palate, this non-alcoholic bubby has a crisp and refreshing acidity, with a prominent tartness that leaves a pleasant dry finish. It tastes exactly like a sparkling rose should taste - almost an exact dupe for a wine with more alcohol.

The strawberry notes were definitely the star of the show, providing a delicate sweetness that was well-balanced by the wine's acidity. You will appreciate the fact that the sweetness was not overpowering, allowing the tart dryness to shine through and provide a refreshing aftertaste.

In terms of food pairings, this non-alcoholic sparkling wine would pair well with a variety of light dishes, such as a fresh salad, grilled shrimp, or even a fruit tart. It would also make a great accompaniment to a cheese platter, providing a nice contrast to the creamy richness of the cheeses.

Overall, the Leitz non-alcoholic sparkling rose is for anyone looking for a unique and refreshing non-alcoholic wine option. The strawberry notes and tart dryness make for a perfect combination, and the effervescence adds a touch of elegance to any occasion. It’s perfect for a baby shower, bridal shower, Easter brunch or a gift for Mother’s Day. Definitely worth a try!
