Dry January: Eins Zwei Zero Non Alcoholic Rose Wine Is A Must Buy

This article was updated by a staff writer May 25, 2023.

Great non alcoholic wine is an elusive quest. Although a lot of innovation is happening in the area of alcohol free drinks, it’s still difficult to find a good still wine. Producers in the non alcoholic sparkling wine arena have delivered some serious home runs but not much has happened in the area of still wines.

The search term ‘best non alcoholic wine’ has increased triple-fold over the past year in North America, which means that people are looking for this doppelganger in increased numbers. Stateside, there are quite a few positive reviews of various alcohol free still wines like Surely, Grey Rock and others. Unfortunately for Canadians, most of these wines are out of reach for us. In addition to border problems, the global transportation and trade route meltdown has only made it harder for good alcohol free wine to land in Canada and be widely available.

It's also been the most asked question over the past year. Is there a good non alcoholic wine that I could recommend? I can name a handful of sparkling wines that I adore, but when it comes to non alcoholic still wine, I've avoided answering this until now. Many of the non alcoholic still wines I like are not widely available in Canada. Several stellar alcohol free wines are only available in Quebec or B.C. (please email P. Dandurand and demand they start bringing 0.0 wines to Ontario!).

The good news is there is a god….a great alcohol-free Rose wine that is accessible to most Canadians has been found!

Leitz EINS ZWEI ZERO Rose (Flat Wine)

When I first tried Eins Zwei Zero Rose, I had already been familiar with their incredible sparkling wine so I had high expectations and it did not disappoint.

This wine is made from Pinot Noir grapes from the Rhineghau region in Germany - a region well-known for producing excellent vintages. Pinot Noir was historically the most common red varietal grown in the Rhinegau, so it’s no accident that this wine uses premium grapes. Leitz is an award-winning winery known for their Rieslings - more on their line of Rieslings at a later date.

The quality of this bottle speaks for itself. The first thing on my rating system is whether a wine has the tell-tale chemical, rubbery aroma and taste that every cheap bottle of non alcoholic wine has. Eins Zwei Zero has transformed the non alcoholic wine experience, as there is no discernible odd flavour or aroma. That should automatically give it a 10, in my books…

The nose has slight hints of raspberry and possibly rose. It’s got a delicate mouthfeel and drinks like a dream with a nice balance of sweet and tart acidity. The subtle notes of juicy strawberry and slight notes of rhubarb make this a delicious bottle for salads, fish, grilled chicken or if you’re stuck inside due to frigid weather, this does pair very nicely with crispy oven roasted chicken thighs and spicy potato wedges (sorry, no recipe for you!).

Me, truly enjoying a glass of Eins Zwei Zero wine after a long day. Love at Last!

Leitz Eins Zwei is imported through Vinelands winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario, where you can order it directly. It is also available online through Soberlicious.ca and through SoftCrush.ca retailers in Western Canada.
