Thomson & Scott have already taken the non-alcoholic wine world by storm, with their popular Noughty sparkling wines and still red wine. They’ve got an award-winning secret formula for making non-alcoholic wine that people just really like to drink. And now, just in time for summer they’ve released two new fantastic blends you should run to get your hands on before they sell out - a crisp and classy white and a light and fruity rose.
Noughty Dealcoholized Blanc
Thomson & Scott’s new Noughty Blanc non-alcoholic white wine is a force to be reckoned with. It’s one of the finest non-alcoholic white wines to be produced in the world - alongside only one or two others at that level and in that category.
The Blanc is a blend of 55% chenin blanc and 45% chardonnay, with grapes grown at a dryland farmed vineyard in Darling, South Africa. This means the vines are watered only through natural rainfall and environmental moisture, rather than irrigation, in the typical European way. After the wine is aged, spinning-cone technology is used to gently dealcoholize the wine with fantastic results.
On the nose, this non-alcoholic white has a nice hint of grapefruit oil and peaches. No overly chemical smell. The light aroma is a tease, leading you to a first delightful sip.
On the palette, the Noughty Blanc is soft and buttery with green apple and peach notes. The nice smooth finish has a hint of minerality which is lovely, and just a gentle memory of chardonnay.
There’s not a lot of acidity but a nice light tartness that hits the back of the palette, and barely any sweetness which is a true delight in a non-alcoholic white wine.
This is an easy drinking non-alcoholic white wine, with full marks for being just an overall great experience to drink. A perfect option for outdoor living this summer!
Noughty Dealcoholized Rose
Pinotage is a fantastic under-the-radar varietal that only wine geeks know about. It’s literally the red grape of South Africa, as it was created there in the mid-1920s and it’s used widely in both domestic and international blends. It’s sort of an under-rated red varietal that’s fantastic on its own with dominant smoky and spicy notes. Although the new Noughty dealcoholized still rose is only 1% Pinotage, it’s needed for the traditional pink hue of rose wine plus some added flavour notes that pair nicely with the 99% chenin blanc (the top planted grape in South Africa!).
The most interesting thing about the Noughty still rose is it’s matured ‘sur lie’, meaning it’s fermented while in contact with fine yeast which gives the finished wines a more creamy or nutty flavour. This extra step definitely aids the Noughty rose in maintaining flavour integrity during the dealcoholization process.
This non-alcoholic wine is a Provence style rose with a very pale pink colour and a light berry and peach cobbler aroma on the nose.
On the palette, it’s delicately fruity just as expected. There are gorgeous strawberry and stone fruit notes, and really well-balanced acidity. It’s juicy but not overblown - just the right amount for a rose.
This is another crowd-pleaser from Noughty to add to their existing line-up of dealcoholized wines that drinkers and non-drinkers alike love.
