Drink up! An exciting week of news for alcohol-free Canada
/Just when we thought things couldn’t get more exciting here in Canada, they did. There is so much news this week in the alcohol-free world, that each of these items actually deserves a story of their own. However, for the sake of sharing this massive ripple of energy and joy with everyone, here is a brief round-up of what’s been shaking out this week!
NIAGARA ZERO
Canada FINALLY has innovation happening with non alcoholic wine. As we wrote about here, Canada has a flourishing domestic wine industry, but a dearth of products that are alcohol-free. And although there are dozens of new ‘wine’ products on the market south of the border, it’s difficult to find a good non alcoholic flat wine in Canada (domestic or imported). Not for long though! Niagara Zero is a new brand that just set up shop to bring Ontario’s first domestic, alcohol-free wine to market in 2022. Silver Swallow Luxury Kombucha
We’ve all heard of kombucha, but have you tried luxury kombucha? We were excited to hear about Silver Swallow, a made-in-Ottawa brand of top-notch, high-end kombucha that drinks like champagne. It’s made from the delicate flowers of silver swallow organic white tea, picked only once a year, in the high altitude regions of Fujian Province in China. Some say this particular varietal tastes like heaven. And we promise, you will be in heaven when you taste this kombucha! Stay tuned for more as we experiment and bring you all the delicious details.
Harmon’s Craft Beer
The East End of Toronto is notorious for its breweries and beer lovers, so it only makes sense that one of the first non-alcoholic beers to be made in Toronto is coming from there. Harmon’s Non Alcoholic Craft Beer launched this past week with three products - a hazy IPA, a lager and a pale ale. We’ve tried the lager and it’s right up there as one of our top picks for our go-to non alcoholic beer. Stay tuned for a full review by our contributing beer columnist Antoine Tedesco.
Feragaia
You are all in for a treat, if you get your hands on a very hard to find bottle of Feragaia, now available in Canada. This small-batch producer is a special Scottish innovation they say is the ‘spirit of wild earth’. It’s made from 14 responsibility sourced land and sea botanicals from the wilds of Scotland. Reviews from the UK highlight the complexity and uniqueness of this product which seems to fit into a category all it’s own in the non alcoholic space.
Better Rhodes
And last but not least….Better Rhodes is a leading alcohol-free marketplace in the United States, but with the founders roots in Canada it wasn’t going to be long before we had our own chance to experience better roads too. They launched this week, joining the seven other alcohol-free marketplaces serving the Canadian population (no excuse really not to order some AF drinks to try!). Better Rhodes founder and native Waterdownian Daniel Stiller says they’re starting with brands already available in Canada but will be layering in new and unique options regularly.
