Review: Smoky Bay's 0.0 Rose does not disappoint

Our previous review of Smoky Bay gave their Shiraz high marks for drinkability and flavour, so there were high expectations for the Smoky Bay 0.0 Rose. It did not disappoint!

In general, non alcoholic Rose wines are the all stars in this category as the style stands up well to the process of removing alcohol. There are a lot of other great Rose wines in the non alcoholic space, both still wine and sparkling.

The Smoky Bay brand originates in Australia, but both their alcoholic and non alcoholic wines are shipped to Canada and bottled in Quebec. They produce three styles of 0.0 wine - Chardonnay, Shiraz and Rose - using spinning cone technology which results in a fantastic quality product.

The 0.0 Rose will amaze and delight you. On the nose it has a delicious aroma of tart fruit, juicy and oh so temptingly like real Rose. There is none of the chemical aroma present in cheaply made non alcoholic wines. It brings back lovely memories of patios and summertime heat, soon to be here in Canada.

Your first sip will be heavenly, as you experience the balanced notes of tart strawberry and fresh fruit salad on your palette. The mouthfeel is the perfect amount of density and not too light or overly heavy.

On the second and third sip, you’ll start to taste some slight notes of peach and very ripe summer stone fruit underneath the tart layers. Your palette will sing! The balance in this wine is 10/10 - it’s a perfect blend of sweet and tart with complexity and length unusual for non alcoholic wine. The acidity is also on par with what a Rose should drink like.

For some palettes unused to non alcoholic wine, it may be slightly on the sweeter side with 8g of sugar per 250ml glass. The sweetness is well balanced though and in comparison to other non alcoholic wines, it’s beautifully accommodated.

Smoky Bay 0.0 Rose is available through UpsideDrinks.com for Canada and U.S. delivery.
