Everyone loves a surprise! And if you like beer surprises, Free Bar has you covered.
Straight from the horse’s website: “Free Bar’s goal is simple: to create a community through discovery and exploration of non-alcoholic beverages.”
If you subscribe, every month a Non-alcoholic Beer Box of premium beers is delivered to your door. You won’t know which beers are in the box, so get your taste and olfactory senses ready for a voyage.
The March Discovery Non-alcoholic Beer Box recently arrived on the Some Good Clean Fun doorstep. In the box, a mix of beer offerings from a pale ale to an IPA and even a beer infused with organic Nordic Reishi mushroom. Yep, you read that correctly!
So, let’s crack the 6 pack (12 & 18 pack boxes also available) and taste a few unique beers you won’t necessarily find in the grocery or liquor store aisles.
Kicking things off is Reishi Citra from the UK’s Fungtn , which has a small amount of Reishi mushroom in the mix. Why? Apparently, to harness the “superfood fungi power used in traditional medicine and wellness for thousands of years.” Reishi Citra pours light golden with faint notes of stone fruit and pineapple with no mushroom flavour. The sweet & sour vibe is crisp, a little pop-like with pronounced bitterness. It cuts the spicy hot pepper oil in a spinach ricotta manicotti.
vandeStreek bier’s Grapefruit IPA is refreshing and thirst-quenching with lots of grapefruit on the nose. Nice velvety mouthfeel, with a solid puckering from the hops and the grapefruit. The Dutch brewery uses a variety of hops and really cranks up the citrus flavour in this IPA. Great with a seafood salad.
The iOTA Hazy IPA from Phillips Brewing and Malting pours golden and cloudy with a head that disappears quickly. Lightly carbonated, not too heavy, with flavours of grain and tropical flavours of orange and peach. A pronounced malty sweetness with a silky smooth and creamy mouthfeel thanks to the oats. A bowl of nuts to snack on is a perfect match.
Packed with hops, the Nonny Pale Ale is full of juicy tropical fruit aromas. Heavy citrus flavours with a surprisingly light bitterness. Brewed with four ingredients, no additives or preservatives it’s crisp with a hoppy bitterness that goes perfectly with a cheeseburger, fries or onion rings.
The next two beers in the box were enjoyed (and reviewed) recently by Some Good Clean Fun alongside a few others you might be interested in.
The False Start Marzen, a classic German amber lager from Harmon’s Craft Brewing, has notes of orange biscuits and a bubbly head that disappears quickly. As it’s typically a fall Oktoberfest beer, you might want to order this box simply for this can, as you won’t be able to get it again until next fall!
What’s the Point, a smooth wheat beer from Alberta’s One for the Road Brewery, has mellow fruity notes with hints of coriander, orange peel and clove.
Thanks to the non-alc industry coming of age, the beer flavours in Free Bar’s March Discovery Non-alcoholic Beer Box weren’t necessarily a big surprise. They were all very flavourful. Not knowing what was in the box was the real thrill. So, if you like the unexpected, sign up and get ready to jump head-first and eyes-closed into the beer glass.
If you find something you really like, Free Bar also offers 4-packs of the options that you want more of which you can order directly a la carte from their website.
Free Bar ships across Canada, and the price could be as low as $5 depending on where you’re located.
Cheers!
