Hot buttered rum is one of those cold-weather, holiday season drinks that is truly enjoyable as a treat once a year. It translates really well into a non-alcoholic cocktail so here is our yummy recipe for Hot Buttered Yum.

Hot buttered rum is usually a single serve drink, made in a glass with raw butter and boiled water from a kettle, but this recipe is cooked in a large batch for entertaining. The long, slow cooking time allows the rich flavours of the spices and brown sugar to infuse into the butter.

Non-alcoholic spiced rum adds heat to your nocktail

This recipe uses a non alcoholic spiced rum called RumISH from Denmark that we adore in a drink like this. It’s got heat and a spicy kick that elevates your non-alcoholic cocktails. It’s widely available on Amazon and it makes this a fun drink for anyone rethinking drinking. You can leave out the zero proof spiced rum and serve on its own as a mocktail for the kids.

Level of difficulty

This recipe is super easy! The most labour intensive part of this recipe is straining out the solids after it’s done cooking.

When to serve Hot Buttered Rum

Make a batch for the family so it’s ready after ice skating or sledding, hosting a holiday open house or decorating the Christmas tree.

Ingredients

1 cup Light Brown Sugar (it has a pale brown or yellow colour to it)
1 cup (1 stick) Unsalted Butter
3 Cinnamon Sticks
6 Whole Cloves
6 Allspice Berries
2 Vanilla Beans, slit open vertically
1 teaspoon kosher or himalayan salt
6 cups Water
Whipping Cream
Nutmeg (preferably whole nutmeg with a grater to grate freshly)

1 bottle RumISH Non Alcoholic Rum

Directions

Add the first eight ingredients to a cast iron pot, bring to a boil and then and simmer on LOW for roughly an hour. Occasionally open the lid and whisk ingredients to break up the butter.

When it’s done, use a slotted spoon to remove loose spices and any butter solids; keep the pot on a warmer or on a gas element set to the lowest setting.

To serve: Pour 2 oz of the non alcoholic rum into individual mugs. Fill up the mug with the liquid from the slow cooker. Top with whipping cream and freshly grated nutmeg.

*This can be served on it’s own, without the non alcoholic rum, for kids of all ages!
